Dua Lipa Sues Samsung for $15M Over Image Use

British pop star Dua Lipa has taken legal action against Samsung Electronics, seeking at least $15 million in damages for allegedly using her image without permission to promote television sets. The lawsuit, filed on Friday in a California federal court, claims that Samsung featured a copyrighted photograph of the singer on the front of cardboard boxes containing televisions for retail sale.

Details of the Allegations

According to the lawsuit, the image in question is titled "Dua Lipa - Backstage at Austin City Limits, 2024," and Lipa holds all rights to it. The pop star's legal team argues that Samsung benefited from what appeared to be her endorsement of the product, misleading consumers into believing she approved of the televisions.

Infringement Claims

Beyond copyright and trademark infringement, Dua Lipa has accused Samsung of violating her publicity rights. The filing includes screenshots of social media posts and comments suggesting that the image on the boxes influenced potential customers to purchase the product. One fan commented they would buy the TV "just because Dua is on it."

Lipa's lawyers stated that the singer became aware of the alleged infringement in June last year and demanded that Samsung cease using her image. However, the electronics manufacturer reportedly refused to comply.

Impact on Brand Identity

The lawsuit contends that Samsung's unauthorized use of Lipa's image has caused and continues to cause dilution of her brand identity and commercial goodwill. It falsely conveys to the public that she endorses the products, the legal team added.

A spokesperson for Samsung Electronics declined to comment, citing the pending litigation. Representatives for Dua Lipa did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
