Essence Black Women in Hollywood Awards Illuminate Beverly Hills with 'Off Script' Celebration
LOS ANGELES — "Oh my God, I love this event." This heartfelt exclamation from Teyana Taylor resonated deeply as she stepped onto the stage at the Essence Black Women in Hollywood event last Thursday. Throughout the evening, her sentiment echoed in every word, embrace, and joyful laugh that filled the luxurious venue.
The annual Oscar-week gathering, held at the Fairmount Century Plaza in Beverly Hills, embraced the theme "Off Script," shining a spotlight on Black women who have defied industry norms and made significant impacts both on and off screen. Hosted by the talented Marsai Martin, known for her role in ABC's "black-ish," the event kicked off with energy and grace.
Rising Stars and Legacy Honorees Take Center Stage
R&B singer and actor Tyrese set the tone with a soulful performance of his hit "Sweet Lady," captivating the audience. Teyana Taylor presented the Rising Star Award to her co-star Chase Infiniti, who recently graduated college in 2022 and quickly landed roles in Apple TV's "Presumed Innocent" and the Academy Award-winning film. Infiniti, beaming with pride as her family watched, expressed gratitude for mentors like Taylor, Regina Hall, and Ruth Negga.
"My career, though it's just starting, has been marked by the generosity and mentorship of other Black women who have paved this path for me," Infiniti said. "I feel grateful and honored to be here today, and more than anything, extremely grateful to have been welcomed into this community."
Jurnee Smollett introduced her godmother, LaTanya Richardson Jackson, who received the Legacy Award. Through touching anecdotes about Jackson's philanthropy and behind-the-scenes kindness, Smollett highlighted one of Black Hollywood's beloved figures. Jackson's acceptance speech, filled with wisdom on overcoming adversity and finding purpose through art, drew rounds of applause and thoughtful reflections.
"God put a light inside all of us, and that light is for you to shine," Jackson declared. "You don't need to chase the shiny thing — you are the shiny thing!" She concluded with a shout-out to Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, who received a standing ovation alongside Representatives Jasmine Crockett and Maxine Waters.
Cultural Icons and Visionary Tributes Inspire the Crowd
Kerry Washington was honored with the Cultural Icon Award, introduced by her "UnPrisoned" co-star Delroy Lindo. In her 12-minute speech, Washington recalled the 2012 Essence event, noting her initial nerves among talented peers vying for the role of Olivia Pope in "Scandal." She emphasized the overwhelming support she received, which freed her from fear.
"Despite my fears, I got up and I started to speak, and when I felt the love and support in this room, something in me got set free," Washington remembered. "The energy in this room on that day was all love and generosity. You weren't waiting for me to fail, you were praying for me to win … and I felt it."
The evening culminated with the Visionary Award presented to Zinzi Coogler and the women of "Sinners," including Hannah Beachler, Wunmi Mosaku, Jayme Lawson, Ruth E. Carter, Autumn Durald Arkapow, and Shunika Terry-Jennings. Michael B. Jordan and Ryan Coogler offered heartfelt introductions, with Ryan praising his wife's leadership and brilliance.
"She is brilliant, and she is a phenomenal leader," Coogler said. "I lead for work all the time; I lead in my family. It's nice to come home to someone I know I can trust to lead." Zinzi Coogler, emotional in her speech, honored their parents for their sacrifices and creative spirit.

Singer Mya delivered a powerful performance of "Unbreakable," energizing the crowd as the event drew to a close. After Marsai Martin officially concluded the ceremony, the room buzzed with conversations, photo requests, and networking. A viral moment occurred when actor Zendaya crossed the room to meet Olandria Carthen, star of "Love Island USA," who later expressed her excitement on social media.
"I will NEVER get over this moment," Carthen posted. "I almost fainted when I seen her coming towards me with the biggest smile on her face."
