Alex Ligertwood, the Scottish-born singer best known as the lead vocalist for the legendary rock band Santana, has died at the age of 79. The news was confirmed by his family and representatives, though no cause of death has been disclosed.
A career spanning decades
Ligertwood joined Santana in 1979, replacing vocalist Greg Walker. He performed on several of the band's albums, including Marathon (1979), Zebop! (1981), and Shango (1982). His powerful voice and energetic stage presence became a hallmark of Santana's sound during the 1980s. He left the band in 1994 but returned for occasional performances in later years.
Before Santana, Ligertwood was a member of the British rock band The Brian Auger Oblivion Express, with which he recorded several albums in the early 1970s. He also collaborated with artists such as Jeff Beck and Donovan.
Remembering his legacy
Tributes poured in from fellow musicians and fans. Santana guitarist Carlos Santana said in a statement: "Alex was a phenomenal vocalist and a dear friend. His voice brought joy to millions, and he will be deeply missed."
Ligertwood is survived by his wife and two children. A private funeral is planned, with a public memorial to be announced later.
