Family Demands Investigation Into Influencer's Mysterious Death During Zanzibar Birthday Celebration
The family of a New Jersey-based social media influencer is demanding answers and challenging official accounts surrounding the woman's sudden death in Zanzibar, Tanzania. Ashly Robinson, who maintained an active Instagram presence under the name Ashlee Jenae, passed away while celebrating her 31st birthday with her fiancé, Joseph McCann, in the East African nation.
Conflicting Accounts Emerge
According to Tanzanian police reports shared with local news outlet Mwananchi, Robinson died on Friday under circumstances authorities believe point to suicide. However, Robinson's mother, Yolanda Denise Endres, has vehemently disputed this characterization in interviews with ABC Philadelphia affiliate WPVI.
"She has never done anything that would ever ever lead me to believe that she would do something to harm herself like that," Endres stated emphatically. "She was happy." The mother described the African trip as intended to mark "the next chapter" of her daughter's life, following a recent engagement.
Troubling Timeline of Events
Robinson had posted a joyful video to Instagram on April 3 showing McCann proposing to her at the luxurious Zuri Zanzibar resort. Yet just days later, on April 8, Robinson called her mother to report that she and McCann had been moved to separate rooms following an argument.
The situation escalated dramatically the following day when Endres received a call from McCann instead of her daughter. "He told me that Ashly did something to herself and she was being taken to the hospital, and he told me she was stable," Endres recounted. When she pressed for details, McCann revealed the incident had occurred "11 hours prior."
Medical Findings and Public Suspicion
A hospital medical report obtained by ABC Philadelphia documented an unidentified mark around Robinson's neck and noted that McCann "found she hung herself on the door." Robinson was subsequently transferred to a second medical facility, which officially listed her cause of death as cerebral hypoxia resulting from strangulation and suffocation.
Meanwhile, Robinson's Instagram comments have flooded with followers expressing suspicion toward McCann, with many openly accusing him of involvement in her death. Despite these public allegations, Tanzanian authorities clarified as of Tuesday that McCann is not currently suspected of any wrongdoing, though his passport has been confiscated during the ongoing investigation.
Family's Determined Pursuit of Truth
Endres has vowed that the family will continue pressing the Tanzanian government for transparency and additional information. They have formally requested access to surveillance footage from the resort where the tragedy occurred.
"She was loved," Endres declared. "She was not just going to be discarded and forgotten about." The family's determination underscores their refusal to accept the preliminary conclusions without thorough independent verification.
Media outlets including HuffPost have reached out to Robinson's family for further comment but have not received immediate responses as the investigation continues to unfold with international attention.
