Florida Man 'Palm Beach Pete' Denies Being Jeffrey Epstein in Viral Video
A Florida resident who goes by the online moniker "Palm Beach Pete" has found himself at the center of a viral social media storm after being mistakenly identified as the late financier Jeffrey Epstein. In a video posted late last week, the man was filmed driving a convertible in South Florida, sparking widespread speculation due to his physical resemblance to Epstein.
Viral Video Sparks Confusion
The video, originally shared by Instagram user Andrew Posey, shows a man with white hair and a square jaw wearing a white baseball cap and sunglasses. Text over the footage claimed, "Epstein out here in South Florida," while the person recording asserted that Epstein is alive. This clip quickly gained traction, being reposted on accounts like OnlyinFlorida and amassing hundreds of thousands of views across various platforms.
Jeffrey Epstein, who owned a home in Florida, died in his jail cell in 2019 while awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges. Authorities ruled his death a suicide, but conspiracy theories about his survival have persisted online.
'Palm Beach Pete' Sets the Record Straight
In response to the viral attention, the unidentified man, known as Palm Beach Pete, took to social media to clarify his identity. On Thursday, he posted on X, writing, "I’m not Epstein I promise…" along with a link to a video. In that video, recorded from a car, he explains, "Hey everybody, this is Palm Beach Pete and my video went viral ’cause some dude randomly filmed me as I was driving on I-95, unbeknownst to me. And the next thing I know, I’m a viral sensation."
He added that he was unaware of the video's spread for several hours, saying, "So, I got a lot of traction, it’s pretty crazy." When asked off-camera if he is Epstein, he firmly replied, "I’m not Jeffery Epstein. I’m Palm Beach Pete."
Public Reaction and Broader Context
This incident highlights how quickly misinformation can spread on social media, especially involving high-profile figures like Epstein. The viral video tapped into ongoing conspiracy theories, despite official reports confirming Epstein's death. Palm Beach Pete's swift response aimed to quell the rumors and reassure the public of his separate identity.
As social media continues to blur lines between fact and fiction, cases like this underscore the importance of verifying information before sharing. For now, Palm Beach Pete remains a local Florida figure, distinct from the notorious financier, as he navigates his unexpected fame.
