Larry David, the star and creator of “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” has strongly criticized President Donald Trump for hosting a UFC cage fight event on the White House lawn earlier this month to celebrate Trump’s 80th birthday. Speaking to Variety on Tuesday night, David called the event a “travesty.”
“It was a travesty. What else can you say about it? It was embarrassing. I was embarrassed to be an American,” David told Variety.
UFC Octagon on the South Lawn
A full UFC octagon was constructed on the South Lawn for the event, which featured corporate sponsor advertisements. During the fights, one competitor directed a vulgar insult at former first lady Michelle Obama. The spectacle drew widespread condemnation from critics.
David, who also co-created “Seinfeld,” has long been an outspoken critic of Trump. He has previously described Trump as a “sociopath” and a “sick man.” On his show “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” David has frequently used Trump as comedic material, mocking the MAGA movement’s red hats in one episode and Trump’s mug shot in another.
New Series with Obama Production
David’s comments came during the premiere of his new series, “Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness: An Almost History of America,” which debuts this weekend on HBO and HBO Max. The series is produced by former President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama’s production company, Higher Ground.
