Nicolas Cage Legally Changes Name to Nicolas Cage, Embraces Identity
Nicolas Cage Legally Changes Name to Nicolas Cage

Nicolas Cage, born Nicolas Kim Coppola, has officially changed his name to Nicolas Cage, a move that solidifies his independent identity away from his famous family. The Oscar-winning actor revealed in an interview with Variety that he legally changed his name last year, stating, "I am Nick Cage. I'm Nick Cage in life, and I'm Nick Cage on camera."

Why the Name Change?

Cage, 62, explained that he wanted to forge his own path and not be defined by his family connections. "'Tis better to be the patriarch of my own little family than the clown cousin on the margins of someone else's," he said. The actor adopted the surname "Cage" from the Marvel Comics character Luke Cage and the avant-garde composer John Cage, seeking a "short and sweet" name like "James Dean."

Family Background

Cage is the son of the late August Coppola and nephew of director Francis Ford Coppola and actress Talia Shire. His famous relatives also include Sofia Coppola and Jason Schwartzman. Despite his family's prominence in Hollywood, Cage wanted to establish his own legacy.

Early Career and Name Change

He made his film debut in 1982's Fast Times at Ridgemont High under the name Nicolas Coppola. However, after other cast members constantly quoted his uncle's movies, he decided to change his name. "I decided, I don't need this, and I changed it to Cage," he told Wired in 2022.

Accepting Both Names

Cage is comfortable being called either "Nick" or "Nicolas," saying, "I'm both! I think people know me as both." He noted that his father gave him the French spelling of Nicolas, which has always frustrated him because people often add an "h."

The actor's recent work includes the series Spider-Noir, and he has hinted at retirement after a few more films. This name change marks a significant step in his personal and professional journey.
