Nicole Kidman Embarks on New Career as Death Doula Following Mother's Death

Academy Award-winning actress Nicole Kidman, with over 100 acting credits to her name, has announced a significant career shift. The 58-year-old star revealed she is training to become a death doula, a decision inspired by the passing of her 84-year-old mother, Janelle Kidman, in September 2024.

A Personal Inspiration for End-of-Life Support

Kidman shared her motivation during a speech at the University of San Francisco's War Memorial Gym as part of the Silk Speaker Series. "As my mother was passing, she was lonely, and there was only so much the family could provide," Kidman explained, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. "Between my sister and I, we have so many children and our careers and our work, and wanting to take care of her because my father wasn't in the world anymore."

The actress, who has four children with ex-husbands Tom Cruise and Keith Urban, described how her sister Antonia Kidman, 55, has six children, creating complex family dynamics. "That's when I went, 'I wish there was these people in the world that were there to sit impartially and just provide solace and care,'" she continued.

Understanding the Role of a Death Doula

A death doula serves as a non-medical companion who offers personalized and compassionate support to individuals, families, and their care circles as they navigate death, loss, and mortality. This definition comes from the International End-of-Life Doula Association, highlighting the emotional and practical assistance these professionals provide.

Dr. Jill Schwartz-Chevlin, Chief Medical Officer of home-based palliative care company Vynca, emphasized the importance of death doulas in a statement to HuffPost. "Death doulas create a safe space for open dialogue that helps patients and families honor patient wishes as they move through the final stages of their life's journey," she explained. "They help patients honor who they are beyond what they are. When we face the end of life, we want someone close who can help us understand that we are human."

Kidman's Personal Reflections and Family History

In a December 2024 interview with "CBS Sunday Morning," Kidman shared poignant details about her mother's final moments. "The final words my mama said, which I didn't know were gonna be the final words... I was going to get on a plane and go back to see her," she recalled. "And she was like, 'Maybe wait a minute because I think you just need to take care of yourself right now, Nicky.'"

This advice has profoundly impacted Kidman, who noted, "So, I'm doing that more. And I say that to other people in the world, and particularly women. I think we tend not to take care of ourselves."

The actress's father, Dr. Antony Kidman, died in 2014 after a fall at a restaurant in Singapore's Tanglin Club. He was reportedly visiting his daughter Antonia Kidman in Singapore at the time, adding to the family's experience with loss and grief.

A New Chapter of Expansion and Learning

Kidman described her decision to become a death doula as "part of my expansion" and "one of the things I will be learning" in the future. This career move represents a significant departure from her Hollywood roots, focusing instead on providing comfort and support during life's most challenging transitions.

The announcement highlights how personal experiences can shape professional paths, even for established celebrities. Kidman's journey into end-of-life care underscores the growing recognition of death doulas as valuable contributors to holistic healthcare, offering emotional support that complements medical treatment.
