Producer Responds to Daryl Hannah's Critique of 'Love Story' Series
One of the producers behind the television series "Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette" has publicly addressed the scathing criticism leveled by actress Daryl Hannah. In a recent essay published in The New York Times, Hannah blasted the series as "tragedy-exploiting" and an example of "textbook misogyny." She specifically took issue with her portrayal by actor Dree Hemingway, describing the characterization as "irritating, self-absorbed, whiny and inappropriate."
Producer Brad Simpson's Defense
In an interview with Variety published on Friday, producer Brad Simpson defended the creative team's approach. He insisted that they had approached "every character with empathy and love" while acknowledging that "it's difficult for some people to see themselves represented" on screen. Simpson emphasized that the series was always intended to focus on John and Carolyn's story, with extensive research conducted into the people and moments that shaped their relationship.
"You know, from the beginning of this, this was going to be John and Carolyn's story, and we put a lot of research and rigor into all the people and moments in the series that ultimately shaped their relationship," Simpson said. "We read a lot of biographies and journalistic accounts. Anytime you're dealing with characters that are based on real people, there are big emotions and sensibilities."
Fact-Checking and Legal Rigor
Simpson highlighted the show's "very vigorous fact checking" process ahead of its premiere on February 12 on FX and Hulu. This statement appears to counter Hannah's assertion that the show "is not even a remotely accurate representation of my life, my conduct or my relationship with John." He noted that the legal team was rigorous in fact-checking, even though the series is a dramatization.
"The legal team is very rigorous about fact checking us, even though it's a dramatization," he explained. "And even though these shows say from the beginning that we are trying to tell the emotional truth and we're dramatizing events."
Series Details and Background
The series stars Paul Anthony Kelly as John F. Kennedy Jr. and Sarah Pidgeon as Carolyn Bessette Kennedy. It is executive produced by Ryan Murphy, known for hits like "Glee" and "American Horror Story." The show follows the romance between Kennedy—the late son of former President John F. Kennedy and former first lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis—and Bessette, a fashion publicist at Calvin Klein. The couple married in 1996 and tragically died in 1999 when the private plane Kennedy was piloting crashed off the coast of Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts.
Daryl Hannah, renowned for roles in films such as "Splash" and "Kill Bill," dated Kennedy from approximately 1989 to 1994. Their romance was believed to be ongoing when Kennedy and Bessette were introduced, adding a layer of personal history to her critique.
Reception and Controversy
Despite mixed reviews, "Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette" has sparked a resurgence of interest in the couple. However, it has faced a chilly reception from those with personal ties to Kennedy and Bessette. Kennedy's nephew, Jack Schlossberg, notably gave the series "a capital 'F' for fiction," echoing concerns about its accuracy and portrayal of real-life figures.
This ongoing debate highlights the challenges of dramatizing real events and the emotional responses it can evoke from those directly involved or affected by the story.
