Jen Psaki Expresses Bewilderment at Melania Trump's Surprise Epstein Statement
MS NOW host Jen Psaki could not hide her amused bewilderment on Thursday as she reacted to first lady Melania Trump's seemingly sudden decision to deliver remarks about her past connections to the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and his convicted former accomplice Ghislaine Maxwell.
"Mind-Blowingly Bananas" Moment on Air
"I just have to start with something absolutely mind-blowingly bananas that happened today," Psaki declared at the very beginning of her show. She continued, "You probably didn't know that Melania Trump was scheduled to deliver a rare public statement today. But even if you did know, you probably didn't guess she was going to single-handedly reignite the whole Epstein scandal in the process."
Psaki described how the first lady approached the podium "in a very self-important way" and immediately cut to the chase with her statement.
The First Lady's Unexpected Declaration
The host played a clip showing Melania Trump standing in the Grand Foyer of the White House, the same location President Donald Trump had used just one week earlier for remarks about the Iran war. In the clip, the first lady stated firmly, "Good afternoon. The lies linking me with the disgraceful Jeffrey Epstein need to end today."
When the clip concluded, a chuckling Psaki responded, "I mean, well, good afternoon to you, Melania Trump! I was watching that in my office—first of all, it popped up on my screen and I was like, 'What is happening here?'—and I was thinking, 'Am I hallucinating? What the hell is going on? Whose idea was this?' I had lots of questions."
Surprise Announcement and Congressional Call
According to MS NOW reports, the first lady's remarks came as a complete surprise to nearly everyone, including President Trump himself, who was reportedly unaware that his wife would mention Epstein during her statement. In addition to addressing the Epstein connections, Melania Trump also called for a congressional hearing for survivors of sexual abuse.
Psaki's Speculation on Motivations
The former White House staffer offered several possible explanations for the unexpected announcement. "I guess one possibility is that it's a sign the war really is going that badly," Psaki suggested on Thursday. She added, "Another is that they are trying to get ahead of a story that a reporter is working on. I guess we'll learn if that's the case soon enough. Who knows?"
Revelation of Past Communication
During her remarks, Melania Trump admitted that she had emailed Ghislaine Maxwell at least once. This 2002 exchange, which illustrated a friendly relationship between the two women, was ultimately made public in February of this year.
Symbolic Significance of Location
Psaki noted the particular significance of where the first lady chose to deliver her statement. "The whole thing was even more bizarre given that the first lady seemed to formally stage her remarks to match the visuals of the president's primetime address to the nation on Iran last week," she observed.
Drawing from her White House experience, Psaki explained, "I can tell you, where you give a speech is basically a signal of how important you think it is. And let me just tell you, Melania was exuding self-importance this afternoon. So, now that Melania Trump has put Epstein back in the news—congratulations, Melania."
