Savannah Guthrie Returns to Today Show Following Mother's Disappearance
Savannah Guthrie has made her emotional return to NBC's Today show, more than two months after her mother, Nancy Guthrie, vanished from her home in Tucson, Arizona. The television host appeared on Monday morning, greeting viewers with a heartfelt message about being back home.
"Good morning and welcome to Today on this Monday morning," Guthrie said as she began the broadcast. "We are so glad you started your week with us and it is good to be home."
A Symbolic Return in Yellow
Guthrie wore a bright yellow dress for her return, while her co-host Craig Melvin sported a matching tie and pin. The studio was decorated with vibrant yellow flowers, a color often associated with hope during hostage situations. Despite the personal turmoil, Guthrie maintained a professional demeanor, immediately diving into the day's news without mentioning her mother's case.
The NBC star last hosted the program on January 30 before taking leave to focus on the search for her 84-year-old mother, who was taken against her will from her Arizona home on February 1.
Emotional Interview Reveals Family's Anguish
Just over a week before her return, Guthrie sat down with friend and colleague Hota Kotb for her first interview since the disappearance. During the emotional conversation, Guthrie expressed the family's ongoing pain and desperation.
"Someone needs to do the right thing. We are in agony," she told Kotb. "It's unbearable. And to think of what she went through. I wake up every night in the middle of the night, every night, and in the darkness, I imagine her terror."
Guthrie emphasized her determination to continue searching, stating: "And it is unthinkable, but those thoughts demand to be thought. And I will not hide my face. She needs to come home now."
Struggling with Faith During Easter
On Easter Sunday, Guthrie shared a poignant message about disappointment and hope, revealing her personal struggles during the holiday season. She reflected on feelings of abandonment and questioned whether Jesus experienced similar emotions during his trials.
"These moments of deep disappointment with God, the feeling of utter abandonment. For most of us, there will come a time in our lives when these feelings hold sway," Guthrie shared in her Easter message.
The Decision to Return to Work
In her interview with Kotb, Guthrie discussed the difficult decision to return to Today, describing the show as her family while acknowledging her uncertainty about the transition.
"I can't come back and try to be something that I'm not. But I can't not come back because it's my family," she explained. "I don't know if I can do it. I don't know if I'll belong anymore, but I would like to try. I would like to try."
Finding Solace in Faith
Guthrie also spoke about relying on her faith during this challenging time, sharing a profound spiritual experience. "I heard a voice, and it said, 'You do know where she is. She's with me. She's with me,'" she recounted.
"So whether she is on this Earth still or whether she is in heaven, I know where she is. I know who she's with. But we need to know," Guthrie added, emphasizing the family's need for closure.
Ongoing Investigation and Reward
The Guthrie family has offered a substantial $1 million reward for information leading to Nancy Guthrie's recovery. Authorities continue to investigate the disappearance, which has drawn national attention and concern.
As Savannah Guthrie resumes her role on Today, she brings both professional dedication and personal resilience to the morning broadcast, balancing her public responsibilities with private heartache as the search for her mother continues.
