Shania Twain is proving she has no intention of dressing for anyone else’s expectations. The Canadian country-pop superstar, 60, found herself at the centre of an online debate after appearing in a series of bold stage outfits while opening for Harry Styles during his 12-night run at Wembley Stadium in London. Styles’ Together, Together shows wrap up on July 4, per RadarOnline.com.
Bold Fashion Choices Spark Debate
The singer stepped out in three striking Dolce & Gabbana looks throughout the concerts, but one outfit in particular got people talking. In a video shared on social media, Twain performed her hit Man! I Feel Like a Woman while wearing a sheer black lace mini dress paired with thigh-high hosiery. The outfit revealed parts of her undergarments.
Critics were quick to weigh in. “NICE GRANNY UNDIES,” one person wrote on X. “QUIT ITS RUINING WHAT YOU WERE.” Others argued that certain fashion choices become less appropriate with age. “Sometimes….ya gotta realize, we’re all getting old and some things just aren’t appropriate anymore,” another commenter wrote, per the Globe.
Fans Defend Twain, Backlash Not One-Sided
Another X user shared footage of Twain’s performance and simply asked: “Shania… why?” Several critics also compared Twain to Madonna, another music icon who has faced scrutiny over her appearance and stage outfits. “This is just like Madonna and others not knowing when to hang ’em up,” one commenter wrote, according to the Daily Mail. “It doesn’t work for Madonna. It doesn’t work for Shania. Try having a little class, ladies,” another added.
However, the backlash wasn’t one-sided. Plenty of fans jumped in to defend Twain, arguing she looked fantastic and should be free to wear whatever she wants. “Why what? She looks incredible,” one supporter wrote. Another pointed out that Twain remains in remarkable shape, writing that she is “still doing Hella better than most” even as she gets older.
Twain Proudly Showcases Wembley Wardrobe
Criticism hasn’t shaken Twain’s confidence. On June 19, she proudly showcased her Wembley wardrobe in an Instagram post, giving fans both on-stage and behind-the-scenes looks at the Dolce & Gabbana ensembles. The singer made it clear she loved every minute of the experience. “I would like to indulge here for a moment and mention the @dolcegabbana looks you’re seeing me perform in each night at Wembley,” she wrote. “It’s not just the album I love, it’s not just seeing so many young and inspired faces each night at Wembley. It’s being dressed by one of the greatest designers in the world night after night.”
Embracing Aging and Body Positivity
Earlier this year, Twain told The Independent that she has no problem wearing a bikini at age 60 and isn’t concerned about what others think. “I have a 60-year-old body, but I will walk on the beach in my bikini. I don’t really care if (people) are okay with it or not,” she said. The singer admitted reaching that level of confidence wasn’t always easy. She has previously discussed struggling with body image during menopause, revealing that physical changes left her feeling uncomfortable and frustrated.
Speaking with The Sunday Times, Twain recalled reaching a point where she stopped looking in mirrors before performances because she disliked what she saw. “I hated my body,” she said. “Oh, I can’t stand this changing body.” She later threw herself into intense exercises and strict dieting. Eventually, however, an injury forced her to rethink that approach and develop a healthier relationship with her body.
The renewed confidence comes as Twain releases her latest album, Little Miss Twain. The record, out now, sees the singer revisiting her roots and early musical influences while blending her trademark country-pop sound with touches of rock and soul.
