The Spice Girls' debut single 'Wannabe' celebrates its 30th anniversary on June 26, 2026, with the song having been streamed nearly 1.5 billion times on Spotify. The milestone has revived speculation about a possible reunion, though no official plans have been confirmed.
A Cultural Phenomenon
The British group, formed in 1994, released 'Wannabe' on June 26, 1996, initially in Asia. The track quickly climbed to number one in the United Kingdom, the United States, and dozens of other countries, becoming an anthem for a generation of young women with its message of 'Girl Power.'
Dominic Mohan, a former editor of The Sun who covered the British music scene at the time, told AFP: 'They weren't just a throwaway pop band. They were very spirited and they had quite strong messages as well, about feminism and about girl power and about being who you are.' He added of 'Wannabe': 'It's one of those records, as soon as you hear it you realize that it's going to go down in history.'
Individual Styles and Lasting Influence
Unlike previous girl groups in matching outfits, each Spice Girl had her own distinct style: Mel B (Scary Spice) wore animal prints, Victoria Beckham (Posh Spice) favored dark dresses and a bob, Emma Bunton (Baby Spice) preferred pastels, Mel C (Sporty Spice) sported athletic gear, and Geri Halliwell (Ginger Spice) famously wore a Union Jack dress. Mohan curated an exhibition at the Barbican Centre in London titled '1996: 30 Years on,' featuring the group's iconic looks. Mel B loaned the leopard-skin catsuit she wore at the 1997 Brit Awards, where 'Wannabe' won two prizes.
Joel Gray, a lecturer in media, art and communications at Sheffield Hallam University, told AFP: 'There's a tendency, I think, for people to look back and think Spice Girls were really bubblegum pop. But they actually had much more of a punk feel.' He noted that their raucous style made them gay icons, as 'their loud and proud persona gave a platform to the LGBT audience.' Mel C and Halliwell were named 'honorary gays' by Britain's Attitude magazine.
Reunion Speculation
The anniversary has sparked talk of a reunion, though the five members have not performed together since the 2012 London Olympics. Mel B told the Press Association this month: 'It's our 30th anniversary, I do think we should be doing something. We're all talking about it, but nothing has been confirmed.' The women are said to have remained close, with four of them attending Emma Bunton's 50th birthday earlier in 2026. So far, the group has only announced a T-shirt and a vinyl reissue of 'Wannabe.'
Gray commented: 'I don't think we're going to see a permanent full-time reunion, but I could absolutely see them doing something again as a group. What I've learned with the Spice Girls is never say never.'
