Gerry Dee Releases First Netflix Standup Special

Canadian comedy fans have reason to celebrate as one of the country's most beloved comedians reaches a significant career milestone. Gerry Dee is set to release his first Netflix standup special, marking his arrival on the global comedy stage after years of entertaining Canadian audiences.

From Classroom to Comedy Stage

The special, titled "Gerry Dee: Funny You Should Say That", will debut on Netflix on November 18, 2025. This represents a major achievement for the former teacher who spent nine years in education before pursuing comedy full-time. In an interview with Montreal radio station The Beat 92.5, Dee reflected on his unusual career path.

"Every step of the way in my life, at one point that was the goal — to be a teacher," Dee shared. "And I loved it. And then I entered this world of standup, and I left it. I just feel so lucky. You go out and pursue your goals and dreams and everything. And then when you hit them, it's like, wow."

Montreal Production and Comedy Content

The Netflix special was filmed in July 2025 during the prestigious Just for Laughs festival in Montreal. This location holds special significance in the comedy world and provides the perfect backdrop for Dee's global debut. The special features his signature dry observational humor covering topics ranging from open marriages to the truth about Santa Claus.

Not surprisingly, Dee also draws material from his teaching background, offering insights from his nine years at a private school. His ability to find humor in everyday situations has been a hallmark of his comedy style throughout his 25-year career in standup.

A Canadian Comedy Veteran's Journey

Gerry Dee's comedy career has been building toward this moment for decades. Born in Scarborough, Ontario to Scottish immigrant parents, Dee grew up in Toronto where he played hockey at the university level. His academic background includes studies in kinesiology, athletic therapy and education before he made the pivot to comedy.

His breakthrough came when he placed third on the fifth season of NBC's Last Comic Standing, introducing him to American audiences. Prior to that achievement, he had already established himself in Canada with a special on The Comedy Network, performances at Just for Laughs, and an appearance in the 2006 film Trailer Park Boys: The Movie.

Canadian television audiences know Dee best as the host of Family Feud Canada since 2019 and as the creator, writer, and star of the CBC comedy Mr. D. Both roles have made him a household name across the country.

Multiple Projects and Future Plans

The Netflix special arrives during an already busy period for the comedian. Family Feud Canada is currently airing its seventh season, broadcasting Monday through Thursday on CBC and CBC Gem. Beyond his Canadian commitments, Dee has expanded his international presence with his role as Templeton Dudge in the Fox sitcom Animal Control, which has been renewed for a fourth season.

For fans who can't wait until November 18, another of Dee's comedy specials, "Gerry Dee: Let's Be Honest," is currently available for streaming on Roku Channel and Prime Video.

In a statement announcing the Netflix special, Dee expressed his excitement about reaching this career highlight. "To finally have my first Netflix special is truly a highlight of my career," he said. "After 25 years of standup and years on television, there is no bigger platform to share my comedy. The energy of performing in Montreal for Just for Laughs was incredible, and I can't wait for people around the world to see the special."
