Indian fashion designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee is set to bring his distinctive blend of traditional Indian craftsmanship and contemporary style to Vancouver. The celebrated designer will host a personal appearance and pop-up event at Holt Renfrew Vancouver, offering a curated selection of his accessories.
Event Details
Mukherjee will make a personal appearance at the Holt Renfrew store located at 737 Dunsmuir Street on May 2, 2026, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. A selection of his accessories will be available at the store from May 1 to May 31. The collection features handmade handbags with intricate embroidery, Italian leather, and gold-plated hardware.
Design Philosophy
Mukherjee describes his design aesthetic as a balance of maximalist exuberance and minimalist restraint. "My aesthetic is shaped by a life lived in transit, gathering impressions, histories, and emotions from across the world," he explains. "I have always considered myself a global nomad."
His work, he says, speaks a specific language: "Ornate yet controlled, expressive yet grounded." Every influence, whether from Europe, the Middle East, or the Far East, is filtered through an Indian lens. "India remains my grammar, my point of view, and my anchor," he notes.
The Accessory Collection
The accessory collection for Holt Renfrew is a study in contrast. "In India, clothing is often soft, fluid, and unstructured, alive with print and pattern. I wanted to create bags that offer a counterpoint—pieces with strength, structure, and graphic clarity," Mukherjee says. For an international audience, the sensibility is often more restrained, with solid colours and clean lines. "Here, I wanted to introduce a sense of occasion through embroidery and embellishment—accessories that carry panache without disrupting that restraint."
Key pieces include embroidered bags that combine fine leather craftsmanship with the richness of Indian embroidery, and the Calcutta Sling, a defining silhouette that reflects the more minimal side of the brand. "It offers a quiet counterpoint to the exuberance of highly decorative clothing," Mukherjee explains.
Why Canada?
Mukherjee sees Canada as a natural extension of his brand's world. "There is the significant South Asian community that shares an inherent cultural connection with the brand," he says. The event aims to bring his unique vision to a broader audience, celebrating the dialogue between softness and structure, ornament and minimalism.
