Hundreds of Santas Transform Amherstburg into Winter Wonderland

The streets of downtown Amherstburg were awash in a sea of crimson and white on Saturday, November 15, 2025, as a record-breaking 700 participants dressed as Santa Claus took part in the annual Super Santa 5K Run/Walk/Wheel. This festive spectacle served as the official kickoff to the town's beloved River Lights Winter Festival, creating a magical scene along the Detroit River waterfront.

Record Turnout for Conservation Cause

Event organizers expressed overwhelming joy at the community response, with this year's participation smashing previous records. Danielle Breault Stuebing, Director of Communications and Education at the Essex Region Conservation Authority, described the turnout as particularly heartwarming given recent provincial challenges facing conservation authorities.

"It was a wonderful night and a tremendous success for conservation in our region," Stuebing told reporters. "It's a great kickoff to the holiday season."

The event attracted diverse participants including:

  • Parents pushing strollers
  • Dog owners with their leashed pets
  • Sports teams and community groups
  • Competitive runners and casual walkers

Champions and Fundraising Success

The competitive spirit shone through the festive atmosphere as Abram Hamm of Wheatley claimed first place with an impressive time of 16:53 minutes. Close behind were Shawn MacFarlane of Belle River at 17:04 minutes and Henrik Kristensen of Amherstburg securing third place with 17:23 minutes.

While final numbers were still being calculated, organizers confirmed this year's event is expected to have raised over $25,000—a new record for the fundraiser. All proceeds benefit the Essex Region Conservation Foundation, supporting vital local conservation projects and educational programs for children.

"We're really proud and thankful to everyone who came out and participated," Stuebing emphasized. "It takes many hands to keep a course like this safe for all of the participants and we're just incredibly grateful to everyone who had a hand in making it happen."

Festival Launch and Community Celebration

The Super Santa event seamlessly transitioned into the opening ceremonies of the 17th annual River Lights Winter Festival, which will continue through early January. The evening featured traditional holiday celebrations including a tree-lighting ceremony and a spectacular fireworks display that illuminated the sky over the Detroit River.

This community-driven celebration not only showcased Amherstburg's holiday spirit but also demonstrated strong local support for environmental conservation efforts during a critical time for regional conservation authorities.
