Canada's leading entertainment company, Cineplex, is dramatically extending the annual celebration of a cinema staple. The company has announced it is expanding National Popcorn Day into a four-day event, running from January 16 to 19, 2026.
How to Claim Your Free Movie Snack
During the extended celebration, members of the Scene+ loyalty program will receive a significant perk. By presenting a valid movie ticket for a showtime on any of the four days, they can visit the concessions counter on the same day, scan their Scene+ membership card, and receive a free small bag of Cineplex popcorn. This offer is valid at Cineplex theatres across the nation.
"Popcorn isn't just a snack, it's part of the ritual of going to the movies," said Sara Moore, Chief Marketing Officer at Cineplex. "This year, we're giving popcorn the spotlight it deserves with our biggest National Popcorn Day celebration yet."
Popcorn's Reign as the Top Cinema Treat
The promotion highlights popcorn's undisputed status as the favourite movie companion. Cineplex reports that in 2025, popcorn consumption surpassed 2024 levels, solidifying its position as the top snack choice in their theatres.
The love for popcorn goes beyond just eating it. In 2025, Cineplex guests embraced collectible, movie-themed merchandise, purchasing 30 different popcorn bucket designs inspired by popular film franchises. Notable sellers included:
- Buckets from A Minecraft Movie, with the Minecraft Chicken Jockey tub selling out on its opening weekend.
- The massive Fantastic Four Galactus tub, noted as the largest popcorn tub Cineplex has ever produced.
- Designs from Five Nights at Freddy's 2 and Wicked.
Buckets inspired by A Minecraft Movie alone accounted for 22% of all popcorn bucket sales for the year.
