Fans of the epic fantasy series Game of Thrones are in for a shock as two of its most beloved stars reunite on screen in a dramatically different context. Sophie Turner and Kit Harington, who portrayed siblings Sansa Stark and Jon Snow for eight seasons, are now playing a married couple in the upcoming gothic horror film, Dreadful.
From Winterfell Siblings to Gothic Lovers
The film, set for release on February 20, trades the political intrigue of Westeros for a tense, gothic romance. A newly released trailer sets the mood, showing Turner's character, Anne, anxiously asking, "Where is my husband?" before Harington makes a dramatic entrance. The story centers on Anne and her mother-in-law, Morwen (played by Marcia Gay Harden), whose isolated life is upended when a man from their past—Harington's character—returns, triggering a fateful sequence of events.
The casting choice has sent ripples through the fan community, with many expressing their discomfort at seeing the former TV siblings in a romantic light. Reactions on social media ranged from humorous references to the infamous Lannister family dynamics to outright declarations of the pairing being "so weird."
An 'Uncomfortable' On-Screen Reunion
It turns out the audience isn't the only group feeling uneasy. The actors themselves found filming their intimate scenes particularly challenging. In an interview on Late Night with Seth Meyers back in August, Sophie Turner, who also produced the film, revealed the awkward reality. She said Harington was her first choice for the role, but after reading the script full of kissing and sex scenes, he warned her, "Yeah, I'd love to, but this is going to be really f—ing weird, Soph."
Turner admitted she didn't fully grasp his concern until later, joking, "And then I'm like, oh shoot, that's my brother." She described their first kiss on set as an experience that left them both "retching," and called it "the worst, another really bad moment in my career." Despite the discomfort, both were drawn to the strength of the script.
Fresh Wounds from the 'Thrones' Finale
This on-screen reunion arrives seven years after Game of Thrones concluded its controversial final season in 2019, a topic that remains sensitive for Harington. In a recent interview with The New York Times, he addressed the infamous fan petition that demanded the season be remade with different writers.
Harington defended series creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, stating the backlash "genuinely angered" him. He attributed the intense reaction to "a level of idiocy that can only come about through social media," standing by the work of the show's writers.
As Dreadful prepares to hit theaters, it promises to deliver not only chills and gothic atmosphere but also a uniquely awkward chapter in the post-Thrones careers of its two leads. For fans, it will be a true test of separating the actors from their iconic roles.
