Vancouver's Finn Wolfhard Appears in Malcolm in the Middle Revival Finale
Vancouver native and Stranger Things star Finn Wolfhard has made a special appearance in the finale of the Malcolm in the Middle revival series, which is now streaming on Hulu. The four-part miniseries, titled Malcolm in the Middle: Life's Still Unfair, was filmed in Vancouver and features Wolfhard in a cameo role.
Wolfhard's Role in the Revival
In the final episode, Wolfhard portrays an event planner tasked with organizing the 40th anniversary party for Hal, played by Bryan Cranston, and Lois, played by Jane Kaczmarek. The revival series reunites original cast members, including Frankie Muniz as Malcolm, Justin Berfield as Reese, and Christopher Masterson as Francis. Caleb Ellsworth-Clark takes on the role of Dewey, as Erik Per Sullivan did not return for the revival.
How the Cameo Came About
According to reports from Deadline, Wolfhard's cameo occurred after Malcolm in the Middle creator Linwood Boomer discovered that the 23-year-old actor is a devoted fan of the original series, which aired on Fox from 2000 to 2006. Boomer recounted that Wolfhard's agent reached out to ask if he could visit the set, leading to an offer for the uncast part.
"His agent called us and said, 'Can Finn visit the set?' We go, 'S — t, yeah,'" Boomer told Deadline. "He loves the show, he's such a big fan of the show, and we're like, 'Well, there's a part we haven't cast yet. Does he wanna do that? I mean, it's a small part.' And he said, 'F — k yeah, he wants to do it.'"
Positive Reception from Producers
Executive producer Tracy Katsky praised Wolfhard's performance, describing him as "an absolute doll" to work with. She highlighted his charm and comedic talent, noting his interactions with Jane Kaczmarek during filming.
"He was so great. He's so charming. It's so fun to watch him do comedy," Katsky said. "He was so cute with Lois, Jane Kaczmarek. He was standing there and he kept forgetting to deliver his lines, because he was just so overwhelmed that Lois was screaming at him and he'd kind of go, 'Oh wait, I have to act. OK, OK.' It was so cute."
Wolfhard's Recent Projects
Wolfhard, best known for playing Mike Wheeler in all five seasons of Netflix's Stranger Things, has been active in various ventures. He recently hosted Saturday Night Live on January 17 and starred in the Canadian comedy film Crash Land alongside fellow Vancouverite Gabriel LaBelle, which premiered at the South by Southwest Festival on March 13. Additionally, Wolfhard is among the investors who helped save the Park Theatre on Cambie Street in Vancouver.
