Netflix Animation Studios Launches Major Vancouver Campus

Netflix Animation Studios has officially inaugurated its expansive new 110,000-square-foot office complex in Vancouver's Mount Pleasant neighborhood, solidifying the city's reputation as "Hollywood North" and a global hub for animation talent. The purpose-built facility, which spans five floors and officially opened on April 8, represents a significant commitment to the region's creative economy.

Substantial Economic and Employment Impact

The new studio supports a full-time workforce of 450 people and is projected to contribute approximately $100 million annually to British Columbia's gross domestic product. During the construction phase alone, the project injected $50 million into the provincial economy. Netflix has maintained operations in Vancouver for over a decade, and this expansion follows their 2022 acquisition of Sydney-based animation studio Animal Logic, which had an existing Vancouver office in Yaletown.

"I think the biggest thing is we're making an investment and a commitment to the industry here in Vancouver because it is probably one of, if not the world's biggest talent pools," said Amir Nasrabadi, Chief Operating Officer of Netflix Animation Studios. "It's the reason we're here and making this investment. We've done a lot of due diligence, and really this is the place to be."

Designed for Creative Excellence and Sustainability

Designed by Vancouver's Dialog Design, the new facility is part of the innovative Main Alley Project, a development by Henriquez Partners Architects that will eventually encompass five buildings across four blocks. The project emphasizes:

  • Creative workspaces and light industrial spaces
  • Residential units with sustainability focus
  • Low-carbon energy systems
  • Mass timber construction

Nasrabadi highlighted the environmental credentials, noting that "(The Main Alley Project) is a collection of creative economy buildings that are set to be Canada's first carbon-zero campus. That's something we're also really proud of."

Fostering Creativity Through Purposeful Design

Hannah Minghella, Netflix's head of feature animation and family film, emphasized how the studio's design directly supports creative work: "I think what's important about an animation studio is that you're asking creative people to come into a space every day and together collaborate to create something excellent. What we've found is that happens best when people are in community and when they're in spaces that inspire them, and where there is good creative flow."

She added that "this location and environment and design have all been thoughtfully curated to create a space where creativity can thrive. And that's money well spent, because if we continue to make great movies for our audiences globally, that's good business for us."

Expanding Netflix's Vancouver Presence

This new facility significantly expands Netflix's already substantial footprint in Vancouver, which includes the top visual effects studio Eyeline and numerous television and film productions currently in development, including Adam Sandler's upcoming film "Timeout." The company maintains additional animation studios in Burbank, California and Sydney, Australia, but the Vancouver expansion represents their largest dedicated animation facility to date.

The opening reinforces Vancouver's position as a global animation powerhouse and demonstrates streaming companies' continued investment in Canadian creative talent and infrastructure. With its combination of environmental sustainability, creative workspace design, and substantial economic impact, Netflix's new Vancouver studio represents a multifaceted investment in the future of animation production.
