Arnold Schwarzenegger to Revive Iconic Roles in Conan, Predator, and Commando Sequels
Schwarzenegger Revives Conan, Predator, Commando Roles

Arnold Schwarzenegger Announces Major Comeback to Classic Action Franchises

Hollywood icon Arnold Schwarzenegger is preparing for a significant return to the silver screen, with plans to reprise three of his most legendary roles from the 1980s. The 78-year-old actor confirmed during his Arnold Sports Festival in Columbus, Ohio that he will be starring in new installments of Conan the Barbarian, Predator, and Commando, marking a nostalgic revival for action cinema enthusiasts worldwide.

King Conan Project Gains Momentum with Top Talent

According to reports from The Hollywood Reporter, Schwarzenegger will once again wield his sword as the mythical warrior Conan in a reboot titled King Conan. The project has secured acclaimed writer-director Christopher McQuarrie, known for his work on multiple Mission: Impossible films starring Tom Cruise, to helm the production.

Schwarzenegger expressed enthusiasm about the project, describing it as "a great story" that follows Conan being "forced out of the kingdom" before returning amidst "madness and violence and magic and creatures." He emphasized that modern special effects and substantial studio budgets would allow these new films to achieve unprecedented scale and visual impact.

Predator and Commando Sequels in Development

The action star revealed that 20th Century Studios has approached him about returning to the Predator franchise as Major Alan "Dutch" Schaefer, the character he originated in the 1987 science fiction classic. While director Dan Trachtenberg has recently revitalized the series with new installments, producers have expressed strong interest in bringing Schwarzenegger back to what they describe as "the holy grail of Predator movies."

Additionally, Schwarzenegger confirmed he has received a script for Commando 2, which would see him reprise his role as Colonel John Matrix from the 1985 action film. The actor noted that if he returns for all three projects, he will portray the characters at his current age, stating: "I'm still going to kick some ass, but it will be kind of a bit different."

Terminator Franchise Officially Behind Him

Despite this resurgence in his classic roles, Schwarzenegger made clear that his time with the Terminator series has concluded. In a 2023 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he explained: "The franchise is not done. I'm done. I got the message loud and clear that the world wants to move on with a different theme when it comes to The Terminator." He specifically criticized the writing of the fifth and sixth installments, Genisys and Dark Fate, as failing to "close the deal."

Schwarzenegger most recently appeared in Netflix's action-comedy series FUBAR and made what appears to be his final appearance as the Terminator in 2019's Dark Fate alongside original co-star Linda Hamilton.

Reflections on Iconic Catchphrases and Legacy

During a conversation with Postmedia last year, Schwarzenegger reflected on the unexpected cultural impact of his famous movie lines, including "I'll be back," "Stick around!" and "Get to the choppa!" He attributed their lasting popularity to his unique delivery rather than just the writing, noting: "All of them were a surprise... I think it's the way I said it that made it kind of unique."

The original Conan the Barbarian film from 1982 launched Schwarzenegger's career as a major action star, leading directly to his breakthrough role in The Terminator (1984) and subsequent hits like Commando (1985) and Predator (1987). These new projects represent a full-circle moment for the actor, returning to the characters that defined his early Hollywood success while adapting them for contemporary audiences.
