Calgary Musicians Pay Tribute to Prince with Purple Rain Screening and Concert
In a heartfelt homage to the iconic musician Prince, Calgary artists have organized a special event that includes a screening of the classic 1984 film Purple Rain followed by a live concert at the Ironwood venue. This celebration highlights the deep connection between the city's music community and the legendary artist, whose influence continues to resonate decades after his passing.
A Personal Connection to Prince
The tribute is particularly meaningful for local musician Scott Morin, who shares a personal story from 2006 when he was involved in promoting Prince's album 3121 while working for Universal Music. Morin, then heading the jazz division, was appointed marketing director for the Canadian market due to his status as an obsessed fan. He recalls Prince's directive: "I want you to do something cool to promote my record. It's got to be dope."
This led to the innovative Purple Ticket campaign, inspired by Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, where winners from around the world, including Canada, were flown to Los Angeles for a private concert at Prince's mansion. Morin served as a chaperone for the Canadian winners, though he admits it was a bit of a ruse, as he never actually met them. However, he did attend the show and had a memorable encounter with Prince himself.
An Unforgettable Evening with the Legend
Morin describes staying late at Prince's mansion after the concert, where he chatted with backup singers Diamond and Pearl, known as the Twinz. When Prince returned, he noticed Morin and engaged in a humorous exchange. "He talked to me and asked me who I was and talked about himself in the third person; it was really odd," Morin says. After Morin swore in excitement, Prince playfully reprimanded him, leading to a light-hearted moment where security guards joined in, turning it into a bit.
This personal anecdote underscores the profound impact Prince had on his fans and the music industry, making the Calgary tribute event all the more significant. The screening of Purple Rain will allow attendees to relive the film's groundbreaking music and story, while the concert at the Ironwood will feature local musicians performing Prince's hits, celebrating his legacy in a communal setting.
Celebrating a Lasting Legacy
The event not only honors Prince's artistic contributions but also fosters a sense of community among Calgary's music enthusiasts. By bringing together fans and artists, it serves as a reminder of how Prince's work transcends generations and continues to inspire new musical expressions. The Ironwood concert promises to be a vibrant showcase of talent, with performances that capture the essence of Prince's eclectic style.
In organizing this tribute, Calgary musicians aim to keep Prince's spirit alive, ensuring that his music remains a vital part of the city's cultural landscape. Whether through film screenings or live performances, events like this highlight the enduring power of art to connect people and celebrate shared passions.
