Drake's 'Iceman' Album Promo Stunt in Toronto Descends into Chaos
Police officers were compelled to perform crowd control duties after hooligans attempted to ignite a fire on Drake's promotional ice sculpture in downtown Toronto on Monday night. The incident unfolded as fans gathered around the structure, which was erected to promote the rapper's forthcoming album, Iceman.
Chaotic Scene at Bond Street Location
The giant ice block, standing at an impressive 25 feet high, appeared in a parking lot at 81 Bond Street, just east of Yonge and Dundas Streets, on Monday. Drake himself visited the site wearing a Green Bay Packers jacket and shared the coordinates on his Instagram Story with the caption, "Release date inside." This prompted an immediate and overwhelming response from fans who descended upon the location in hopes of uncovering the album's release date.
Shortly before midnight, police were called to the scene after reports emerged of individuals using pickaxes and hammers to break off chunks of the ice sculpture. Videos and photos circulated online showing throngs of people climbing the structure and even setting a fire atop it. Constable Laura Brabant stated in an official release, "Large pieces of ice began falling, creating a dangerous situation for people on the ground, as well as those who climbed the structure." Officers remained on site to ensure public safety and manage traffic and crowd control, with no injuries reported.
Fan Reactions and Additional Promotional Efforts
Following the chaotic events, the area was blocked off, and on Tuesday afternoon, Maurie Sherman from Kiss 92.5's The Roz & Mocha Show visited, humorously noting they were "watching ice melt." A passerby, Stephen Cipollone, expressed frustration, saying, "I'm upset with the people who caused the barricades."
In a related promotional stunt, content creator MD Motivator, also known as Zachery Dereniowski, placed a key inside one of the ice blocks, promising a brand-new car to whoever retrieved it. Dereniowski explained on Instagram, "Drake means so much to me, to this city. He's all about giving back and spreading love." Drake later commented on the post, praising Dereniowski as "THE F***ING GOAT."
Background on Drake's 'Iceman' Album
This installation is the latest in a series of headline-grabbing stunts to promote Iceman, Drake's ninth studio album. Following his 2023 release For All the Dogs, Drake has been teasing this project since last year with the single What Did I Miss? In a recent interview with Complex, Drake expressed his enthusiasm for building fan anticipation, stating, "I love the opportunity for a clean slate of thoughts and excitement and messaging when it comes to the music." He added that he enjoys watching fans create conspiracy theories and interactive content around the album.
Last week, Drake alarmed residents near Downsview Park in North York while filming a music video for a track from Iceman, which involved a large explosion. Police confirmed the detonation was part of the film shoot. Drake has promised that Iceman will be packed with hits, writing on Instagram, "THIS ALBUM BOUT TO PLAY INFINITESIMALLY KNOW DAT."
The promotional efforts for Iceman continue to generate significant attention, blending innovative marketing with unexpected public incidents that keep fans and authorities on their toes.
