Shen Yun Toronto Performance Cancelled After Bomb Threat
A scheduled Shen Yun performance in Toronto was abruptly cancelled on Sunday following a bomb threat that targeted the venue. The incident occurred at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts, located at Queen Street West and University Avenue, prompting immediate police response and evacuation procedures.
Police Investigation and Evacuation
Toronto Police received the threat early Sunday afternoon, leading to the cancellation of the second night of the dance production. Authorities swiftly evacuated the building and cleared the surrounding area as a precautionary measure while they assessed the potential danger.
After conducting a thorough investigation, police announced that the threat "appears to be unfounded" and confirmed that no explosives were discovered at the location. The production company has informed ticket holders that they can reschedule their attendance for future performances.
History of Threats Against Shen Yun
This incident marks not the first time Shen Yun has been targeted by bomb threats. Late last month in Australia, performers received threatening emails warning them to cancel their shows or risk bombs exploding at Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's residence in Canberra.
The email, written in Chinese and reported by the BBC, contained alarming language: "If you insist on proceeding with the performance, then the Prime Minister's Lodge will be blown into ruins and blood will flow like a river." Australian authorities determined the threat lacked credibility, though they evacuated Albanese as a safety precaution.
Lucy Zhao of the Falun Dafa Association of Australia suggested Chinese Communist Party involvement in these threats, stating: "We shouldn't allow such hate crimes and foreign interference to continue in Australia by the Chinese Communist Party."
Understanding Shen Yun Productions
Shen Yun is a traveling nonprofit dance production based in New York that presents traditional Chinese culture as it existed before communist rule. The performances feature classical Chinese dance accompanied by an orchestra blending Eastern and Western instruments.
The production has faced significant opposition from the Chinese government, which has banned it in China due to its association with the Falun Gong (or Falun Dafa) religious movement. The Chinese Communist Party has outlawed Falun Gong and has reportedly persecuted performers and their families connected to Shen Yun shows.
Despite these challenges, Shen Yun continues to tour internationally, presenting what it describes as authentic pre-communist Chinese cultural traditions through elaborate dance and musical performances.
