Stone Roses' Gary 'Mani' Mounfield Dies at 63

The music world is mourning the loss of Gary "Mani" Mounfield, the influential bassist for iconic bands The Stone Roses and Primal Scream, who has died at 63.

His brother, Greg, confirmed the tragic news in a social media statement on November 20, 2025, writing: "It is with the heaviest of hearts that I have to announce the sad passing of my brother. RIP R Kid." The cause of death has not been disclosed.

A Legacy of Musical Innovation

Mounfield was a foundational member of The Stone Roses' original lineup alongside vocalist Ian Brown, guitarist John Squire, and drummer Alan "Reni" Wren. The Manchester band's groundbreaking 1989 self-titled debut album defined the "Madchester" sound and spawned legendary tracks like I Wanna Be Adored, She Bangs The Drums, and I Am The Resurrection.

Their innovative style profoundly influenced the 1990s British music scene, inspiring major acts including Oasis, Blur, and Pulp. After the band's 1996 breakup, Mani immediately joined another seminal group, Primal Scream, where he performed for 15 years before The Stone Roses reunited for a celebrated comeback tour in 2012.

An Outpouring of Tributes

Fellow musicians and fans have expressed profound grief across social media platforms. Stone Roses frontman Ian Brown posted a simple yet powerful tribute: "Rest in peace Mani X."

Oasis singer Liam Gallagher shared his shock, writing: "In total shock and absolutely devastated on hearing the news about Mani. My hero, RIP R Kid."

Peter Hook, former Joy Division and New Order bassist, expressed his sorrow on X: "Oh God. Mani… words just fail me this time, they really do. I cannot believe it. Sending all my love to his family. This is so sad. RIP mate. Love Hooky. X."

The Charlatans' Tim Burgess posted a heartfelt photo with the caption: "One of the absolute best in every way – such a beautiful friend Love you Mani x x Never to be forgotten."

Manchester United, the football club Mani passionately supported, honored him in an official statement: "United deeply saddened by the death of Mani. Manchester music icon and a passionate, lifelong Red. Our deepest condolences go out to the loved ones of Gary 'Mani' Mounfield."

Personal Life and Future Plans

Mani's personal life had recently been marked by tragedy. His wife, Imelda, whom Greg's tribute described as "beautiful," passed away from cancer in 2023. The couple shared twin sons, born in 2013.

The musician had been preparing for a U.K. speaking tour scheduled to begin in September, titled "In The Stone Roses, Primal Scream, And Me," where he planned to reflect on his remarkable career in rock music.

Beyond his work with The Stone Roses and Primal Scream, Mani also collaborated in the rock supergroup Freebass alongside fellow bassists Peter Hook, The Smiths' Andy Rourke, and singer Gary Briggs of Haven.

Gary "Mani" Mounfield's legacy as a defining bassist of his generation and a beloved figure in music history remains cemented through his groundbreaking contributions to British rock culture.
