Veteran journalist Scott Pelley reportedly launched a blistering attack on CBS News Editor-in-Chief Bari Weiss and her newly appointed head of '60 Minutes' during a tense all-hands staff meeting on Monday.
Pelley's Outburst
According to reports from The Guardian and media newsletter Status, the former 'CBS Evening News' anchor accused Weiss of 'murdering' the iconic newsmagazine. 'She does not love this place. She was brought in to kill it and is doing exactly that,' Pelley reportedly said, drawing applause and a standing ovation from the '60 Minutes' staff.
Context of the Conflict
The confrontation followed last week's shock firings of executive producers and correspondents at the nearly 60-year-old program. Weiss, who was not present at the meeting, had fired the show's executive producer and executive editor, ousted two correspondents, and appointed Nick Bilton as the new executive producer.
Criticism of Nick Bilton
Pelley reportedly criticized Bilton's qualifications, calling them 'slender' for the role. Bilton, a former tech columnist and documentarian, has never worked in broadcast TV news. When Bilton suggested a private conversation, Pelley insisted on speaking in front of colleagues. Bilton argued that they were 'my colleagues too,' to which Pelley retorted, 'That remains to be seen.'
Bilton's Defense
According to Status, Bilton declined to explain the reasoning behind the firings when asked by Pelley. On his own appointment, Bilton said he cares 'deeply about this institution' and wants to protect it from declining like other news outlets, citing Time Magazine as an example. After Pelley told him he 'would never be welcomed here,' Bilton responded, 'I have no problem taking a job in a place that I am not welcome, OK? I don't believe that will be the case.'
Broader Implications
The exchange comes amid allegations of political and editorial bias at CBS News since Weiss's appointment following the Trump administration-approved merger of CBS's parent company, Paramount, with Skydance. A CBS News representative did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
