Windsor's KordaZone Theatre Stages 'The Shark is Broken' Play Inspired by Jaws
Short tempers and technical malfunctions combine to create a side-splitting new theatrical production titled The Shark is Broken, which premieres this Friday evening at Windsor's renowned KordaZone Theatre. This engaging play draws inspiration from the legendary 1970s thriller and adventure film Jaws, offering audiences a captivating glimpse into the chaotic behind-the-scenes events that unfolded during the creation of one of Hollywood's earliest blockbuster hits.
Behind the Scenes of a Cinematic Classic
The script for The Shark is Broken was penned by Ian Shaw, the son of Jaws star Robert Shaw, providing an authentic and personal touch to the narrative. The play delves into the humorous and often tense interactions among the film's lead actors—Robert Shaw, Richard Dreyfuss, and Roy Scheider—as they find themselves confined to an uncomfortably small boat. They must contend with inclement weather and a notoriously unreliable mechanical shark, which serves as their co-star in the production.
As the story unfolds, alcohol flows freely, egos clash dramatically, and tempers reach boiling points, resulting in a series of comedic and dramatic moments that highlight the challenges of filmmaking. The cast of Korda Artistic Productions brings these iconic roles to life with Jim Reid portraying Robert Shaw, Brandon Chappus taking on the role of Roy Scheider, and Joey Wright embodying Richard Dreyfuss.
Balancing Humor and Heart
Director Rachel Hillis shared insights into the complexities of staging such a production. "Crafting a narrative like this is undoubtedly intricate," Hillis remarked. "Our goal was to infuse the play with humor without veering into silliness, to maintain seriousness without becoming overly sentimental, and to honor the deeply personal aspects of the story while avoiding strict adherence to them. By emphasizing the universally relatable elements of the play, we believe we have achieved that delicate equilibrium, and we are optimistic that audiences will share this perspective."
Hillis receives assistance from Tracey B. Atin, while Joey Wright also serves as the show's producer, ensuring a cohesive and professional presentation.
