As mosquito seasons stretch longer due to climate change, new research reveals Canadians are ready for a more effective and comfortable way to enjoy time outdoors. A recent Léger survey commissioned by Thermacell indicates that while 84% of Canadians use some form of mosquito protection, 65% report that mosquitoes still disrupt their outdoor time.
Changing Mosquito Patterns
According to a report from the Canada Communicable Disease Report (CCDR), climate change is lengthening mosquito seasons in Canada, increasing the number of mosquito species and extending disease transmission periods. This makes it harder for people to enjoy outdoor activities such as backyard hosting or weekends at the cottage.
Familiar Solutions Fall Short
Despite wanting defense that is effective, safe, and easy to use, many Canadians default to familiar habits like sprays, lotions, and candles. However, overall satisfaction with these methods sits at just 58%, highlighting a disconnect between expectations and reality. In fact, 63% of Canadians say they would spend more time outside if they had a more reliable way to keep mosquitoes away.
New Approach Shows Promise
Among those who have used zone mosquito repellent devices, perceived effectiveness rises to 86%. Awareness of alternatives remains low, with less than 40% of Canadians aware of Thermacell, the #1 selling zone mosquito repellent brand in Canada. Adam Goess, Executive Director of Product Development at Thermacell, notes: “People don’t want to think about mosquitoes or how to get rid of them. They just want to enjoy being outside. When they find a solution that effectively works in the background, it changes how long and how comfortably they can stay outdoors.”
Introducing a New Way to Keep Mosquitoes Away
Thermacell’s new campaign, “Your New Way to Keep Mosquitoes Away,” promotes repellents that create a 20-foot (6-meter) zone of mosquito defense without the need for skin application or flame monitoring. The technology is scent-free, smoke-free, and easy to use, fitting seamlessly into outdoor routines.
Product options include the E-ZoneGuard Patio+ Rechargeable Repeller, which is portable with a fast-charging dock, and the E-ZoneGuard Patio Rechargeable Repeller, offering 9 hours of battery life for extended outdoor use.
This research underscores a growing demand for innovative solutions as Canadians seek to reclaim their outdoor spaces from mosquitoes.
