A marine emergency off the coast of British Columbia has left four people rescued and six unaccounted for, the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) confirmed. The incident occurred late Saturday, prompting a large-scale search and rescue operation involving multiple agencies.
Search and rescue response
The JRCC deployed a helicopter and several vessels to the scene after receiving a distress call around 8 p.m. local time. Four individuals were pulled from the water and transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Their conditions have not been disclosed. The search for the remaining six continues, with crews scouring a wide area of the ocean.
“We are doing everything we can to locate the missing individuals,” said JRCC spokesperson Lieutenant-Commander Sarah Thompson in a statement. “Our thoughts are with the families during this difficult time.”
Details of the incident
Initial reports indicate the emergency involved a small vessel that may have capsized or encountered severe weather. The exact cause remains under investigation. The Canadian Coast Guard and local police are assisting in the search efforts.
“This is a tragic event, and our priority is to bring everyone home safely,” added Thompson. The search area covers several nautical miles, and conditions have been challenging due to choppy seas and limited visibility.
Impact and ongoing efforts
The incident has drawn attention to marine safety in the region. Officials urge boaters to exercise caution and ensure proper safety equipment is on board. The JRCC has not provided a timeline for when the search might conclude, but operations will continue through the night if necessary.
“We are committed to this search until we have exhausted all possibilities,” Thompson said. The identities of the rescued and missing have not been released pending notification of next of kin.
