An out-of-control wildfire burning south of Lytton, British Columbia, has prompted evacuation alerts for several properties as firefighters work to contain the rapidly spreading flames.
Saw Creek Wildfire Grows to 100 Hectares
As of Friday evening, the B.C. Wildfire Service mapped the Saw Creek blaze at 100 hectares. The fire, which ignited on Friday, is suspected to be human-caused and is burning at rank 4 and 5, indicating a highly to extremely vigorous surface fire.
Evacuation Alert for Lytton Residents
The Village of Lytton has issued an evacuation alert for all residents. Officials stress there is no immediate need to evacuate, but residents should be prepared to leave on short notice if an evacuation order is issued. If ordered, evacuees can report to the Lytton First Nation Battlefield Community Hall for shelter.
Highway 1 Closed, Alternative Routes Advised
Drive B.C. reports that Highway 1 is closed between Cottonwood Road and Airport Road for 116 kilometres. Drivers are advised to use Highway 5 and Highway 97 C as alternative routes. Hot and dry conditions are exacerbating the situation, according to fire officials.
