High Streamflow Advisory Issued for Bow River West of Calgary

Water levels are rising due to ongoing snowmelt, with an additional 30-centimetre increase expected through Friday, according to a high streamflow advisory issued for the Bow River. The advisory affects several communities including Banff, Canmore, and Exshaw, covering a stretch from upstream of Banff to Ghost Lake, approximately 45 kilometres west of Calgary.

Potential Impacts on Communities

Low-lying pathways along the river in Banff could be impacted, and groundwater-related issues are possible in Canmore and Exshaw. The Town of Banff stated that emergency crews are prepared for increased risks amid rising water levels. In a social media post on Thursday afternoon, the town advised residents to stay away from all flooded areas and riverbanks. "Muddy water prevents visibility and can hide open sewers, sinkholes, and dangerous debris," the town warned. "Fast-moving water and submerged debris are dangerous. Stay off the river."

Safety Precautions Urged

The Town of Canmore is urging residents and visitors to use extreme caution near the river and stay away from embankments. "What may appear as sturdy ground may be undercut by water underneath," the town said in a social media post. The fast-moving water poses a serious risk, particularly to children and pets. "Be aware that stream flows like we are experiencing are fast-moving and dangerous; people or pets can be easily pulled into water and downstream." Canmore also advises against the use of watercraft on the Bow River within the advisory area. "During high streamflow events, water is moving fast, it is extremely cold, and we also see an increase in debris that poses a significant safety risk," the post continued. "We ask that everyone use caution and judgement around the Bow River. Rescues in these conditions are extremely dangerous for first responders. Don't be the reason others are put at risk."
