Muslim call to prayer rings out in downtown Regina

The Regina City Jamia Masjid in downtown Regina broadcast its first live outdoor call to prayer on Friday, June 19, 2026, marking a significant milestone for the local Islamic community.

First outdoor Adhan in downtown Regina

The Adhan, or Islamic call to prayer, was delivered from the former building of the Canadian Cancer Society’s office, located across the street from Regina’s city hall. The broadcast took place on Friday afternoon and lasted two to three minutes before the mosque's weekly services.

“We believe that this will help us in Regina to be familiar and introduce the Regina City Jamia Masjid within the Muslim and the non-Muslim community because we are here at the heart of Regina downtown,” M Anisur Rahaman told CTV.

Permit details and future plans

The mosque has a permit to broadcast the call to prayer until the end of July 2026, with an additional permit valid until the end of the year that must be renewed annually. Officials are seeking to continue the broadcasts indefinitely. The Regina Police Service granted permission for a one-month test period before issuing a longer-term permit.

Rahaman said, “We believe in multicultural diversity and we appreciate the Regina Police Service for giving us permission to test this call to prayer with the loudspeaker on the rooftop to give us that permission for one month to test, to see how it is going before they actually issue a permit for a longer period of time.”

In addition to the call to prayer, officials announced plans for a childcare centre, an Islamic school, and a larger masjid facility.

Growing Muslim population in Saskatchewan

Saskatchewan’s Muslim population has grown rapidly. In 2011, the province’s Muslim population stood at 10,040. According to Statistics Canada, that number grew to 25,455 by 2021, representing 2.3% of the population, with most residing in Regina and Saskatoon.

Alberta, British Columbia, Ontario, and Quebec are the only provinces where Muslims make up a greater proportion of the population than in Saskatchewan.
