Nova Scotia Invests $6.3M in Drought Projects

The Nova Scotia government has announced a $6.3 million investment to support community projects aimed at combating drought and water shortages across the province. The funding will be allocated to various initiatives, including water storage devices and infrastructure improvements, to help communities better manage water resources during dry periods.

This initiative comes as part of the province's broader strategy to address the increasing frequency and severity of drought conditions, which have been exacerbated by climate change. The projects will be selected through a competitive application process, with priority given to communities most at risk of water shortages.

Tim Houston, Premier of Nova Scotia, emphasized the importance of proactive measures to ensure water security. "We are taking action to help our communities prepare for and respond to drought conditions. This investment will support innovative solutions that protect our water resources and support our communities," he said.

The funding is expected to support a range of projects, including the installation of rainwater harvesting systems, upgrades to water distribution networks, and the development of drought-resistant landscaping. Local governments, non-profit organizations, and community groups are eligible to apply for funding.

Environmental experts have welcomed the announcement, noting that drought conditions are becoming more common in the region. "This is a positive step toward building resilience in our communities," said Dr. Sarah Thompson, a water resource specialist at Dalhousie University. "Investing in local solutions is key to managing water scarcity."

The application deadline for funding is set for July 31, 2026, with projects expected to begin later this year. The province has committed to reviewing applications quickly to ensure timely implementation.
