The Calgary Fire Department lifted river safety advisories on the Bow and Elbow rivers Tuesday morning, citing improved conditions. Flow rates on both waterways have dropped below advisory levels, according to a media release from the department.
Conditions Improve After Runoff Season
Melting snow and floating debris from the annual runoff season had prompted the advisories, but the rivers are now expected to return to typical summer conditions. While reduced visibility and some debris may remain, the public can resume normal activities on and around Calgary’s rivers.
Water temperature remains cold, but the fire department stated that users can safely engage in recreational activities. However, officials continue to urge caution and adherence to proper safety practices.
Ongoing Monitoring and Safety Reminders
Calgary’s rivers are constantly monitored by multiple departments. The fire department emphasized that a lifted advisory does not eliminate the need for vigilance, as river conditions can change rapidly—for example, during a sudden thunderstorm that causes quick, short-duration increases in flow.
The Calgary Fire Department Aquatic Rescue Team will continue to monitor and patrol the city’s waterways. Residents are encouraged to plan ahead before heading out, including actively supervising children and staying within arm’s reach of young children, selecting appropriate watercraft, carrying a boat safety kit, avoiding tying watercraft together, wearing ankle leashes, and ensuring all users wear properly fitting life jackets.
