Ontario Provincial Police have reported that charges are pending following a street racing incident on Highway 401 in Mississauga early Sunday morning. A driver, allegedly engaged in a race, struck a person who was outside their vehicle on the shoulder of the highway.

Incident Details

The collision occurred around midnight in the westbound express lanes near Renforth Drive, just south of Toronto Pearson International Airport. According to police, vehicles were reportedly racing in the area when one driver hit an individual who had stopped to check a tractor-trailer load.

The victim sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to hospital. The driver directly involved remained at the scene, but the other vehicle involved fled. Both vehicles were identified as BMWs.

As of late Sunday afternoon, the two left lanes of the 401 westbound near Renforth remained closed, and police advised motorists to expect delays.

In a separate event, Toronto Police are searching for a suspect after a man in his 20s was shot in the Fort York area on Sunday afternoon. Officers responded to reports of a gunshot at 2:30 p.m. near Queens Wharf Road and Fort York Boulevard. The victim was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
