A powerful offshore earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 struck the southern Philippines on Monday, resulting in at least 19 fatalities and over 200 injuries, primarily due to damaged buildings. The quake also generated a 1-meter (3-foot) tsunami that inundated nearby coastal areas.
Damage and Tsunami Impact
In General Santos City, several buildings collapsed and key infrastructure suffered damage. Tsunami damage was reported in at least one coastal village. Smaller waves were observed in Indonesia, Palau, and as far as southern Japan.
Teresito Bacolcol, director of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, described the event as a major earthquake. He advised residents to seek guidance before returning to damaged structures, warning that aftershocks could cause further collapses.
Regional Seismic Activity
The earthquake occurred in a seismically active region, part of the Pacific Ring of Fire. Authorities continue to monitor aftershocks and assess damage. Evacuations are underway in affected areas.
