Calgary Hit with Heavy Rain and Hail, Environment Canada Warns

Environment Canada upgraded a severe thunderstorm watch to a yellow warning on Saturday afternoon as heavy rain and hail pelted parts of Calgary. The warning followed a watch issued earlier in the morning, with meteorologists tracking a cluster of severe thunderstorms capable of producing strong wind gusts, up to quarter-size hail, and heavy rain.

Storm Details and Impact

The thunderstorms extended south of Calgary and were moving east at 40 km/h, according to Environment Canada. The agency urged residents to take immediate cover if a thunderstorm approaches, advising those outdoors to protect themselves from flying debris and hail. “When thunder roars, go indoors! Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year,” the statement said.

Earlier Predictions

Earlier Saturday, Environment Canada predicted thunderstorms would develop along the foothills and move eastward, wrapping up by late evening. The warning remains in effect for affected areas, with residents advised to stay updated on weather conditions.
