Major Winter Storm to Dump Up to 40 cm of Snow Across GTA This Weekend

A significant winter storm is poised to deliver up to 40 centimetres of snow to the Greater Toronto Area on Sunday, as a polar vortex sweeps through Canada. This event follows more than a week after the last major snowfall, which caused widespread disruptions including school closures, highway shutdowns, and numerous collisions due to slippery conditions.

Environment Canada Issues Severe Weather Warning

Environment Canada has issued an orange warning for the region, indicating severe weather conditions that could lead to significant damage, health impacts, and deteriorating travel safety. The heavy snow began accumulating around 10 a.m., with 100% precipitation expected as the main storm system moves in.

Peak snow rates are forecasted to reach five to eight centimetres per hour, accompanied by wind gusts of up to 50 km/h. These conditions are likely to cause significantly reduced visibility, making travel hazardous throughout the day.

Closures and Cancellations Across the Region

The storm has prompted numerous closures and cancellations across the GTA:

  • The Toronto Zoo will remain closed on Sunday and Monday due to the severe weather.
  • All Toronto Public Library branches are shut down because of deteriorating conditions.
  • Recreational programs hosted at school locations in Toronto are cancelled for Sunday.
  • In Mississauga, all libraries, city office buildings, and ice rinks are closed.
  • Hamilton has closed all city buildings, arenas, and community centres as of noon.
  • The City of Oshawa has declared a significant weather event, leading to the closure of recreation facilities.
  • Toronto Pearson International Airport is experiencing growing flight disruptions, with many cancellations. Passengers are advised to check their flight status before heading to the airport.

Impact on Transit and Highway Conditions

Winter conditions have forced 48 TTC transit stops out of service due to snow and ice buildup, affecting commuters across the city. On the highways, several incidents have been reported:

  • An eastbound transfer ramp from Highway 407 to Highway 404 in Markham is closed due to a jackknifed tractor-trailer.
  • Three centre lanes on westbound Highway 401 at Weston Road in North York are blocked because of another jackknifed tractor-trailer. Motorists are using the far left and far right lanes to bypass the site.

Warming Centres Open for Those in Need

In response to the extreme cold accompanying the storm, several warming centres have been opened in Toronto for residents seeking shelter. Locations currently operational include:

  • 81 Elizabeth St.
  • 885 Scarborough Golf Club Rd.
  • 136 Spadina Rd.
  • 349 George St.
  • 12 Holmes Ave.

Additionally, surge warming sites are active at the Jimmie Simpson Recreation Centre (870 Queen St. E.) and Cecil Community Centre (58 Cecil St.), opening when temperatures hit specific thresholds.

Residents are urged to exercise caution, avoid unnecessary travel, and stay updated on weather advisories as the storm continues to impact the region throughout the day.
