For the second time this week, a person has been charged by a bear in Kananaskis, this time in the Spray Lakes area. The incident occurred on Thursday along the Mt. Shark Rd., where a hiker was bluff-charged by a bear, according to Alberta Forestry and Parks. Officials did not specify the species of the bear involved.
Previous Incident and Advisories
This event follows a similar bluff charge three days earlier near Troll Falls in Kananaskis, where a grizzly bear charged a hiker. That incident led to bear advisories covering several trails off Highway 40. In response to the latest charge, a closure has been imposed on the Tryst Lake parking area in Spray Valley Provincial Park, and a bear warning has been issued for the Mt. Engadine Lodge and Mt. Shark Rd. areas.
Importance of the Area for Bears
The provincial ministry noted that the region is a crucial corridor for bears, particularly grizzly bears, that move in and out of Banff National Park. These animals are emerging from hibernation and actively seeking spring food sources such as dandelions, orchids, grasses, and animal carcasses.
Bear experts suggest that bluff charges may indicate the bears are protecting cubs or carcasses they are feeding on. The incidents also coincide with an increase in human activity in the mountains following winter.
Safety Recommendations for Hikers
Authorities advise hikers to take precautions, including leashing pets, traveling in groups, and making noise. Carrying bear spray and keeping it easily accessible is strongly recommended, as is removing attractants from campsites and vehicles.
These measures aim to reduce the risk of bear encounters as both humans and bears become more active in the region.
