A new study from the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) provides insights into global giving patterns and the factors that encourage generosity. The World Giving Report, a leading analysis of charitable behavior, surveyed over 60,000 individuals across 105 countries to understand how and why people donate to good causes.
Global Donation Trends
In 2025, 61% of people worldwide made donations—either directly to those in need, to charitable organizations, or for religious purposes. This marks a slight decrease from 64% in 2024. On average, donors contributed 1% of their income, though this varies significantly by region. For instance, people in Africa give an average of 1.6% of their income, while Europeans give only 0.6%.
Most Generous Countries
Nigeria ranks as the world's most generous country, with citizens donating an average of 2.8% of their income. The top ten most generous nations are all located in Africa and Asia.
Age and Donation Habits
Adults aged 25 to 44 are the most generous age group, donating twice as much of their income as those over 55 (1.2% vs. 0.6%).
Popular Causes
Religious causes receive the most support, with 31% of people donating to them. Children and youth programs, along with poverty relief, follow closely at 29% each.
Local vs. International Giving
Globally, people are more inclined to support charities operating locally (56%) or nationally (55%) rather than internationally (22%). However, donors in higher-income countries, such as those in Europe, allocate a larger share to international charities compared to those in lower-income nations.
Community Belonging Boosts Generosity
The research identifies key factors influencing giving, including personal motivations, social norms, and a sense of community belonging. In countries where over 80% of the population feels a strong connection to their local community, donation rates are nearly three times higher than in countries with low belonging levels.
Mark Greer, Managing Director at CAF, stated: "Giving is deeply personal, shaped by values, circumstances, and experiences. By understanding these influences globally, we can foster vibrant giving cultures that strengthen civil society. Everyone—individuals, charities, businesses, and governments—has a role in encouraging conversations and actions that build thriving communities."
