Prosecutors have revealed that the individual accused of starting the devastating Palisades fire in January 2025 was allegedly fixated on Luigi Mangione, the man charged with murdering UnitedHealth CEO Brian Thompson. The alleged arsonist, Jonathan Rinderknecht, 30, reportedly expressed deep resentment toward the wealthy, which authorities believe motivated the deadly blaze.
Obsession with Mangione
According to court documents, Rinderknecht frequently searched online for phrases such as “free Luigi Mangione” and “let’s take down all the billionaires.” His obsession extended to conversations with Uber passengers, whom he described as angry and intense, ranting about Mangione, capitalism, and vigilantism. Passengers noted that Rinderknecht drove erratically and expressed being “pissed off at the world” on December 31, 2024, and January 1, 2025.
Motive rooted in resentment
When questioned about his actions, Rinderknecht allegedly stated that setting the fire stemmed from “resentment of the rich enjoying their money as ‘we’re basically being enslaved by them.’” He reportedly compared his act of desperation to the murder for which Mangione was charged. Rinderknecht has pleaded not guilty to federal arson charges.
Destruction and devastation
The Palisades fire, centered in the Pacific Palisades neighborhood of Los Angeles, became the most destructive in the city’s history. It destroyed over 7,000 homes and businesses, caused an estimated $150 billion in damages, and claimed 12 lives. The fire spread rapidly due to dry grass and brush, overwhelming firefighting efforts.
Simultaneously, the Eaton fire raged in another part of Los Angeles County, killing 19 people. Together, the two fires scorched approximately 155 square kilometers, an area roughly the size of San Francisco.
