Edmonton's Lucy the Elephant, 50, Gets Clean Bill of Health in 2025 Checkup
Lucy the Elephant, 50, Gets Clean Bill of Health

Edmonton's cherished Asian elephant, Lucy, has received a clean bill of health following her comprehensive annual physical examinations. The Edmonton Valley Zoo announced the positive results, confirming that the 50-year-old pachyderm is in excellent condition for her age.

Milestone Birthday and Geriatric Care

The two independent health assessments took place in the fall of 2025, shortly after Lucy celebrated a significant milestone: her 50th birthday on July 1. At this advanced age, Lucy is classified as a geriatric elephant. She manages several chronic health conditions common in older elephants, including arthritis and chronic sinus congestion.

The zoo deliberately selected two experts who had not previously assessed Lucy to provide fresh, unbiased perspectives. Dr. Jennifer D'Agostino, a veterinarian with extensive elephant experience, conducted one assessment. Michael McClure, who had consulted on Lucy's foot care in 2025, contributed his specialized knowledge. Both experts independently concluded that the zoo staff provides Lucy with superior nutrition, excellent medical care, and a highly enriching environment.

A Deep Bond and Playful Spirit

Beyond the physical exams, which included ultrasounds and thermal imaging that showed no concerns, Dr. D'Agostino observed Lucy's behavior and mental well-being. She was struck by the profound bond between Lucy and her dedicated handlers.

"One of the things that struck me the most was the incredible bond that she has with those caretakers," D'Agostino noted. "She seems to be very, very attached to them and considers them part of her herd. I saw multiple interactions where she was incredibly engaged... in a playful way."

This observation addresses long-standing concerns about Lucy's psychological health, having lived at the Edmonton Valley Zoo since 1977. The assessment portrays an elephant who is gentle, food-motivated, and exhibits a playful energy with her trusted caregivers.

Looking Ahead: Habitat Enhancements

The positive health report coincides with future plans for Lucy's home. The Edmonton Valley Zoo has confirmed that it is planning enhancements and an expansion for Lucy's indoor and outdoor habitats. Construction on these improvements is scheduled to begin sometime in 2025.

This latest clean bill of health continues a trend. In a 2024 checkup, Dr. Dennis Schmitt, a professor emeritus from Missouri State University, also found Lucy to be in good health for her age, describing her as a calm and gentle elephant. The consistent findings from multiple independent experts reinforce the zoo's commitment to Lucy's long-term care as she lives well beyond the average life expectancy for Asian elephants in captivity.
