Residents of an Oshawa neighbourhood were startled on Wednesday morning when a young black bear was spotted casually walking through their streets. The sighting occurred in the area of Fernwood Avenue and Oshawa Boulevard North, southeast of Ritson Road North and Rossland Road East.
Community Reaction
Photos shared on the Facebook group Downtown Oshawa captured the bear strolling along a residential street. Group members expressed surprise and concern. One post read, 'There is what appears to be a young bear in Oshawa right now.' Another resident commented, 'Where did it even wander from? First time I have seen a bear in Oshawa.'
Some residents attributed the incident to human encroachment on natural habitats. 'This makes me sad. He must be so scared,' wrote one Facebook user. Another added, 'Hopefully the MNR captures it safely and relocates it where there are plenty of berries.'
Official Response
The Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR), which runs the Bear Wise Program to advise on managing black bears in urban areas, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Durham Regional Police also did not provide information. It remains unclear whether authorities responded to the sighting.
Bear Behaviour and Habitat
Black bears typically emerge from hibernation between mid-March and late April, leading to increased sightings. According to the Bear Wise Program, 'As bears wake up after a winter of hibernation, they face a scarcity of natural food sources, leading them to forage in garbage cans and bird feeders.'
Ontario Wildlife Rescue Director Sandy Donald noted that while bears have wandered into Oshawa before, such sightings are rare. Based on the photos, Donald identified the bear as a yearling—an independent bear in its second year of life. 'I do not think that is a cub. I think it is at least a yearling, if not older,' he said.
Residents are advised to secure garbage and remove bird feeders to avoid attracting bears. The MNR encourages reporting sightings to their Bear Wise line.
