Swiss Man on Trial for Murder and Dismemberment of Miss Switzerland Finalist Wife
Trial Begins for Husband Accused of Killing Miss Switzerland Finalist

The trial of Marc Rieben, 42, accused of murdering and dismembering his wife, former Miss Switzerland finalist Kristina Joksimovic, has begun at the Basel-Landschaft Criminal Court in Muttenz, Switzerland. The case has drawn international attention due to the gruesome details of the killing and subsequent desecration of the body.

Background of the Case

Kristina Joksimovic, a former Miss Switzerland finalist, was murdered on February 13, 2024, while the couple was in the process of divorcing. Rieben, the son of a wealthy Swiss lawyer, is charged with murder and desecration of the dead. According to prosecutors, the murder was a calculated act of brutality driven by Rieben's need for control and intense rage.

The Murder

On the day of the murder, the couple had lunch to discuss the end of their marriage. Rieben allegedly refused to accept the divorce and demanded full custody of their children, denying financial support to Joksimovic. During the argument, Rieben grabbed his wife by the throat and slammed her against a wall. He then used a ribbon-like object to strangle her. The autopsy revealed blunt force trauma, cuts and slashes to her face, extensive bruising, and hair pulled from her scalp.

Dismemberment and Disposal

After killing her, Rieben used garden shears, a knife, and a jigsaw to dismember Joksimovic's body. He carefully removed her womb, which prosecutors described as deliberate mutilation or ritualized degradation. Some body parts were pureed in an industrial blender, while others were dissolved using chemicals in the mansion's laundry room. Throughout the disposal process, Rieben allegedly played YouTube videos on his phone. Police later found skin flaps, bone fragments, and tissue at the scene.

Discovery of the Body

Joksimovic's father became concerned when she failed to pick up her daughters from kindergarten. Rieben told him he had no idea where she was, cooked dinner, and put the children to bed. However, the father searched the basement and discovered a black duffel bag with strands of blonde hair protruding. Opening the bag, he found his daughter's severed head with hair still attached. He fled the home screaming, leading to the police investigation.

Couple's Public Image

The couple married in 2017 and appeared happy on social media, sharing family photos and a romantic getaway weeks before the murder. Rieben was described as a devoted father. Friends expressed shock, with former Miss Switzerland Nadine Vinzens stating, "She always made a happy impression on me. I would never have thought that her husband would do something like that." Another friend added, "To me, they seemed like the perfect family."

Defense and Prosecution Claims

Rieben has confessed to the killing through his lawyers but claims self-defense, alleging that Joksimovic suddenly attacked him with a knife. He said the mutilation was a result of panic. However, prosecutors dismiss this claim, citing his efforts to conceal evidence. They highlight Rieben's history of violence, including a previous choking incident involving his wife and an assault on a former girlfriend. The indictment states the murder was propelled by "a selfish attitude and mindset characterized by a need for control, hurt feelings, revenge, and intense rage."

The trial is expected to last five and a half days, with the public barred from the courtroom due to the sensitive nature of the case.
