Calgarians embraced the spirit of Mother's Day on Sunday by participating in two major running events across the city. The 49th annual SportChek Mother's Day Run, Walk and Wheel at CF Chinook Centre drew a sold-out crowd, while the Parkinson Canada SuperMom Walk/Run made its debut in Carburn Park.
SportChek Mother's Day Run Sees Record Participation
The SportChek event, organized by Run Calgary, attracted 5,200 participants, marking a 10-year high. CEO Kirsten Fleming expressed excitement about the turnout, noting that the event raised over $30,000 this year, bringing its lifetime total past $300,000. Proceeds benefit Canadian Tire Jumpstart Charities and the Calgary Health Foundation.
Fleming highlighted the event's role as a family tradition, encouraging families to be active together while celebrating mothers. She also mentioned that the run kicks off Calgary's running season, with the Calgary Marathon expected to see record numbers in two weeks. Planning is already underway for the 50th anniversary next year, which promises surprises and early registration due to anticipated sellout.
Parkinson Canada SuperMom Walk/Run Debuts in Calgary
In Carburn Park, the inaugural Parkinson Canada SuperMom Walk/Run focused on raising funds and awareness for women with Parkinson's disease. Senior event coordinator Hali Ludwick emphasized that nearly half of Parkinson's diagnoses are women, yet research predominantly targets men. The event aims to support women's unique care needs and reduce stigma.
Originally launched in Vancouver three years ago, the event expanded to Calgary and Toronto this year. Despite an initial target of 50 participants, about 200 people attended. Calgary raised approximately $28,000, contributing to a nationwide goal of $500,000 across all three walks. Ludwick expressed gratitude for community support and confirmed the event will return next year.
Both events underscored the community's dedication to health, family, and charitable causes on Mother's Day.
