Langley's Twin Rinks ice rink was evacuated and remains closed on Friday following an ammonia gas leak. The shelter-in-place order issued for nearby apartment buildings has been lifted.
Incident Details
The City of Langley reported that a leak at Langley Twin Rinks, located at 5700 Langley Bypass, was brought to the attention of the fire department just after 6:50 a.m. Langley City Fire Rescue Service confirmed the release of ammonia gas inside the facility, prompting an immediate evacuation.
Response and Containment
“The cause of the release has been identified, and work is underway to address the issue,” the city stated on its website. The fire department has set up a command post at the scene, and a specialized contractor is handling the leak. The Ministry of Environment is also monitoring the situation.
According to the city, the leak is confined to the building and its immediate surroundings. As a precautionary measure, officials temporarily issued a shelter-in-place advisory for apartment buildings south of the facility, advising residents to stay indoors with windows and doors closed. This advisory has since been lifted.
Closure and Further Updates
The ice rink is expected to remain closed for most of Friday. Authorities continue to work on resolving the issue and ensuring public safety.
