As the sun comes out and people spend more time outdoors, Ontario doctors are sharing essential summer safety tips. Dr. Trevor Arnason, Medical Officer of Health, emphasizes the importance of taking precautions to prevent heat-related illnesses, insect bites, and other common summer hazards.
Stay Hydrated and Cool
Dr. Arnason advises drinking plenty of water, even if you don't feel thirsty. Avoid sugary or alcoholic beverages, which can dehydrate you. Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing and take breaks in the shade or air-conditioned spaces.
Protect Against Insects
Use insect repellent containing DEET or other approved ingredients to prevent bites from mosquitoes and ticks. Check for ticks after spending time in wooded or grassy areas. Remove any ticks promptly with tweezers.
Sun Safety
Apply sunscreen with at least SPF 30, and reapply every two hours or after swimming. Wear a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses to protect your face and eyes. Avoid prolonged sun exposure between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., when UV rays are strongest.
Water Safety
Supervise children closely around water, including pools, lakes, and beaches. Wear life jackets when boating or engaging in water sports. Learn CPR and basic water rescue skills.
Food Safety
Keep perishable foods in coolers with ice packs. Cook meats to safe internal temperatures. Wash hands and surfaces often when preparing food outdoors.
By following these tips, you can enjoy a safe and healthy summer in Ontario.
