Labour and Birth Services Halted at New Brunswick Hospital
Horizon Health Network has announced the suspension of labour and delivery services at the Upper River Valley Hospital in Waterville, New Brunswick. The decision, effective immediately, will impact expectant mothers and families in the region who rely on the facility for childbirth care.
According to officials, the suspension is temporary and stems from staffing shortages that have made it impossible to maintain safe and consistent obstetrical services. Pregnant patients who had planned to give birth at the Upper River Valley Hospital are being redirected to other facilities, including the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital in Fredericton and the Saint John Regional Hospital.
“This was not an easy decision, but patient safety is our top priority,” said a Horizon spokesperson. “We are working diligently to recruit and retain the necessary staff to resume services as soon as possible.”
The suspension has raised concerns among local residents and healthcare advocates, who worry about the increased travel time and potential delays in emergency care for pregnant women. The hospital will continue to provide other services, including emergency care, inpatient care, and diagnostic imaging.
Horizon Health Network is urging affected patients to contact their healthcare providers for guidance on alternative birthing plans. The organization has also committed to providing updates as the situation evolves.
