The Ottawa Hospital has confirmed plans to eliminate approximately 400 positions, which represents three percent of its current workforce, as the institution grapples with persistent financial challenges affecting the broader healthcare sector. The announcement came through a statement released on Thursday, April 9, with hospital leadership emphasizing efforts to minimize involuntary departures through vacancy management and early-retirement options.

Leadership Communication and Strategic Measures

Hospital President and CEO Cameron Love, along with Chief of Staff Virginia Roth, communicated the difficult decision to employees via email on the same day. In their memo, they assured staff that every possible measure was being taken to protect jobs and maintain access to services while continuing to deliver excellent care to the community. The hospital has been collaborating with the provincial government to address its financial pressures, implementing a series of cost-saving initiatives.

These measures include offering early retirement to eligible employees, freezing and eliminating vacant positions, adopting innovative and more efficient care delivery methods, returning to pre-COVID staffing levels, freezing travel expenses, and transitioning to a more economical provincial group benefits plan. Despite these efforts, the hospital acknowledged that some position reductions would be unavoidable in the coming months.

The Ottawa Hospital, which operates across three main campuses—General, Civic, and Riverside—is one of Canada's largest health-sciences centres and the biggest hospital in Eastern Ontario. With over 13,000 employees, it ranks among the largest employers in the National Capital Region, with nurses comprising more than one-third of its workforce. The hospital has reiterated its commitment to preserving capacity for emergencies, surgeries, clinics, and inpatient care, while seeking new, innovative ways to enhance efficiency.
