Italian divers have discovered the bodies of four Italian nationals in a sea cave in the Maldives, Italy's foreign minister confirmed on Monday. The tragic find comes after five scuba divers went missing earlier this week while exploring an underwater cave near the Alimathaa resort in the Maldives archipelago.
Discovery and Identification
The bodies were located in a submerged cave system known for its challenging conditions. The fifth diver remains unaccounted for, and search efforts are ongoing. The divers were part of a group from Greenpeace Italia, which released a photo of one of the victims, Monica Montefalcone, on Friday.
Investigation Underway
Authorities are investigating the cause of the incident, with early reports suggesting strong currents and limited visibility may have played a role. The Maldives Police Service is coordinating with Italian officials to recover the remains and conduct a thorough inquiry.
This tragedy has shocked the diving community in Italy and beyond. The victims were experienced divers, and their deaths highlight the dangers of underwater cave exploration. The Italian embassy in Sri Lanka, which oversees Maldives affairs, is providing consular assistance to the families.
The foreign minister expressed condolences, stating, "Our hearts go out to the families of these brave individuals. We are doing everything possible to bring closure to this tragic event." The Maldives government has pledged full cooperation in the investigation.
